This lovely album features The Pocket Trio, one of the most talented piano trios to emerge in Sydney for several years, including pianist Andrew Scott, bassist Max Alduca and drummer Tim Geldens. I used to regard these three brilliant musicians merely as so-called “young musicians” but am now aware that they’ve evolved into active participants in various ensembles in what can only be regarded as an unprecedented flowering of jazz music in Sydney over say the last ten years. Here the trio accompanies four excellent singers, each of whom is on two tracks: Kate Wadey, Tilly Street, Edo Santoni and Monica Trapaga…

This album, released in late 2024, won the ARIA award for Best Jazz Album in November, 2025, and thoroughly deserves to be reviewed. This is despite the unfortunate fact that participation in the ARIA Awards is too expensive for many small record labels, which means that a great number of possibly superior jazz albums are effectively prohibited from competing. A prime example is Julien Wilson’s Lionshare Records, which may or may not have albums in their portfolio worthy of a gong. There surely must be a way for ARIA to rectify this conundrum, so that all Australian jazz albums are eligible for this award…
