ERIC MYERS REVIEWS 1980-87

Eric Myers was the Sydney Morning Herald’s inaugural jazz critic, his first review appearing on February 2, 1980. This folder contains text of articles published in the newspaper up to Myers’s resignation in 1982. Photographs which may or may not have appeared in the newspaper have been added. From 1983 Myers was The Australian’s jazz critic until his resignation in 1987. His reviews for that newspaper also appear in this folder. Articles which appeared in other publications are also included, if they serve to document the performances of Australian jazz musicians. Headings which appeared in the newspapers were always written by sub-editors. The most excruciating of them have been modified, but mostly they are reproduced as they appeared in newspapers. Readers can click on the INDEX button for a list of reviews or articles in this folder.

DALY-WILSON BIG BAND SWINGS IN FOUR

by Eric Myers

Sydney Morning Herald, April 12, 1980

The Daly-Wilson Big Band has been, for 11 years now, the most exciting big band in Australian jazz. The series of concerts at the Argyle Courtyard provides the Sydney jazz public with a unique opportunity to hear this great band to advantage. The Argyle Courtyard is, acoustically, a superb venue for an amplified big band, producing a rich, clear sound. Although the electric jazz/rock idiom is still basic to Daly-Wilson, this concert was distinguished by much superb, swinging music in four…

Sydney Morning Herald, April 16, 1980

The proliferation of jazz venues continues in Sydney with the opening of Backstage, formerly the Camelot Restaurant. The general atmosphere of the "smorgasbord and champers" evening on Monday suggested that Backstage in-tends to be a happy, rollicking venue, with a strong emphasis on hot, swinging jazz, whether it be traditional or mainstream. This performance featured the three resident bands — the Harbour City Jazz Band, the Sheiks and the Johnny Nicol Quartet…

MARBLE BAR: VIGOROUS TRAD/MAINSTREAM EXHIBITION

by Eric Myers

Sydney Morning Herald, April 18, 1980

The bi-monthly concert at the Marble Bar, Sydney Hilton, on Wednesday night was, as usual, a packed-out, vigorous exhibition of traditional or mainstream jazz by three established groups. The music of the San Francisco Jazz Band, led by the outstanding reeds player Paul Furniss, was reviewed in these columns recently, following one of their regular performances. The second group to appear was led by the singer Nancy Stuart…
