ERIC MYERS REVIEWS 1980-87

Eric Myers was the Sydney Morning Herald’s inaugural jazz critic, his first review appearing on February 2, 1980. This folder contains reviews and articles written by Myers up to his resignation in 1982. Text published in the newspaper is reproduced here, with the addition of photographs which may or may not have appeared in the newspaper. In 1983 Myers moved to The Australian, where he was that paper’s jazz critic, until he resigned towards the end of 1987.  His reviews for that newspaper appear also in this folder. Articles which appeared in other publications are included here, if they serve to document the performances of Australian jazz musicians. Readers can click on the INDEX button for a list of reviews or articles in this folder.

While in Jakarta the group will be performing at the Mandarin Hotel and a number of public concerts both in Jakarta and other Indonesian cities are scheduled. Other than Indra on keyboards, the group includes his father Jack Lesmana (bass guitar), Dale Barlow (woodwinds), Steve Brien (guitar), Harry Rivers (drums & vocals) and Tony Thyssen (percussion)…

JAMM Magazine, October, 1982

The recent trip to Indonesia by 16-year-old Indra Lesmana's group Children of Fantasy was an important event in cultural relations between Australia and Indonesia. The spectacle of our musicians playing with Asian jazz musicians in their own countries will be welcomed by the Australian jazz world—it reinforces the fact that jazz has become a truly international art form, not just an American phenomenon. The tour was a success, but a report in the September/October edition of Encore magazine is somewhat misleading…

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC AT THE MUSEUM

by Eric Myers

Magazine, January 2, 1983

The Phil Treloar concert at the Australian Museum next Sunday will be one of the most interesting and unique events in contemporary music in this city for some time. Treloar is one of Australia's most distinguished jazz drummers. He has been appearing recently at Jenny's Wine Bar & Bistro with various groups including Roger Frampton's Intersection, Guy Strazullo's In Focus, and occasionally with the Bernie McGann Trio. But Treloar is not only a sideman. Over the last few years he has branched out into composition…
