1940 Born in Sydney
1956-58 Began career playing at Mocambo, Bel-Air and El Rocco jazz clubs with young musicians such as Bernie McGann, Dave Levy, Bruce Cale and Mike Nock, and Bob Bertles
1959-61 In Melbourne, spent the three years playing various venues with Joe 'Bop' Lane, Keith Stirling, Tony Gould, Graeme Lyall, Chuck Yates and Dave MacRae
1962 Brief period in Hobart. Returned to Melbourne to work with Dave Tolley (bass) and Dave MacRae (piano) before leaving for 12 months in Surfers Paradise.
1963 Back to Sydney playing at El Rocco with Dave Levy and Sky Lounge with Bryce Rohde and Bruce Cale…

For someone with my interest in Australian jazz, this Jim McLeod’s Jazz Tracks album is a must. I bracket it with Southern Spectrum (Larrikin LRJ 231) as one of the most useful recordings to appear in recent months. I mean by that that I can see that they serve an important function, as well as being musically enjoyable. Let's face it - too many books are written, too many records made, too many things produced. 30 years ago we couldn't get enough jazz records. Now, I can't help wondering why a lot of them are made. Jazz Tracks and Southern Spectrum, however, have an important air of occasion, in the literary sense. They bring to our attention things that have not been sufficiently noted, they are important documents regarding the state of the jazz tradition in Australia…

Anyone wanting to know the state of Aussie jazz should buy Jim McLeod's Jazz Tracks, just released by the ABC. The album contains a distillation of all that is good in Australian jazz. McLeod is producer and presenter of Jazztrack, the excellent late-night program on ABC-FM on Mondays, Fridays and from 6-7pm Saturdays.
