TEN PART INVENTION: CONTEMPORARY AND INVENTIVE
by Barry Morris
Daily Telegraph, July 16, 1987
For sheer dynamism and passion, the contemporary band Ten Part Invention is hard to surpass. Led by hard-driving drummer, John Pochée, TPI features some of the most exciting soloists in Australian jazz. The band returns to The Basement for two nights only next Tuesday and Wednesday to perform original compositions written by musical directors Roger Frampton and Miroslav Bukovsky. The material is both creative and well written, with outstanding compositions and arrangements by pianist Roger Frampton and Miroslav Bukovsky (first trumpet), but the strength of this group lies in Pochée's playing. Almost a legend on the Australian jazz scene, he is at his best as a big band drummer. He is a powerhouse, driving the band with energy and intensity. The sound is innovative, modern jazz, frequently moving over to avant-garde, always exciting and always different…
