One of the month's highlights was the visit of US guitarists Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel. Their opening concert at The Basement was a joyous experience. At their press conference the same day, both men stressed that, for them, "fusion" or "jazz/rock" music could not be regarded as jazz. Herb Ellis considered that George Benson was a jazz guitarist who is not at present playing jazz…

This impressive album is from Jon Hunt, a sophisticated musician originally from Adelaide, who plays clarinet and saxophones in traditional and swing styles. He holds a PhD from Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium of Music where he taught clarinet for six years. Moving to Melbourne in 2013, he went on to the US in 2017, where he’s been playing in what one might call the pre-bebop scene, in the “mainstream” styles that existed before the bebop revolution of the 1940s, and are still being played today…

News from The Basement: Sydney's leading jazz venue features the Sydney Jazztet on Monday nights during December. This group, which includes Steve Murphy (guitar), David Glyde (saxophones & flute), Dave Ellis (bass) and Willie Qua (drums) appear on the newly-released album Blowin' In From New York, featuring the American vibist, Harry Sheppard. Tuesday nights in December feature the Bruce Cale Quartet, with Bruce on bass, Paul McNamara (piano), Bob Bertles (flute & saxophones) and Alan Turnbull (drums)…
