Blues For Ray from Sydney’s Michael Walder Trio is another debut album to hit my desk.... The trio includes Walder on double bass in tandem with two outstanding musicians, pianist Aaron Blakey and drummer Alex Hirlian, winner of the highly competitive 2018 National Jazz Awards at Wangaratta. Walder himself is a splendid bassist with a very big sound, and I’m not sure whether this emanates from his attack on the instrument in live performance, or whether a studio engineer has built up his sound in the mix because he’s the bandleader…
GAI BRYANT’S PALACIO DE LA RUMBA

Gai Bryant’s 18-piece big band Palacio de la Rumba, was formed as long ago as 2013. It was evident at their sold-out concert on Friday night - I estimate an audience of maybe 200 or more packed into the main auditorium of the York Club – that the “jazz for dancing” torch has now been passed to a new generation, a different category of dancers, younger and decidedly more sexy than the elderly traditional jazz crowd. The event was indeed a spectacle, built around the infectious, exuberant sounds of Afro-Cuban jazz…

Major Zulu’s gig was sold out. It was such an immaculate performance that it leaves a reviewer somewhat speechless. What can one say about a performance that has so much going for it, and ticks so many boxes? Here is a real artist, who was good enough last year when - owing to covid and international participation was light – she headlined the 2021 festival…
