In an exuberant performance at Sydney’s Foundry 616 on Thursday night, the nine-piece ensemble Mingus Amongst Us celebrated the jazz community’s release from four months of lockdown. Palpable feelings of liberation and freedom were in the air. The event not only highlighted emancipation from covid restrictions; it also demonstrated the unique capacity of jazz as an art form to express deeply felt sentiments in the wider community…

VIRNA SANZONE OPENS SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S JAZZ FESTIVAL

On Friday night before a sell-out crowd, the splendid singer Virna Sanzone opened the tenth Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. It was a memorable performance, and moreover a beautiful experience that prompted some significant realisations. It underlined how fortunate the Sydney jazz audience is, to be able to hear such music of the highest excellence in civilised surroundings, and in a small audience context, which retains the intimate milieu where jazz has always felt most at home…

Singer Vince Jones, now an icon in Australian music, is best-known as a supreme performer in the small, intimate jazz club, his natural milieu. The large concert hall however, presents different challenges. Here Jones encounters the perennial difficulty confronting jazz artists in this country since time immemorial. How can a good sound-balance be achieved in such a venue with high ceilings and minimal capacity to absorb the strident sounds of amplified  instruments, particularly guitar, double bass, and drums?
