Having attended a jazz co-ordinators’ conference at the Australia Council in Sydney last week, I made my way to Surfers Paradise for the Gold Coast International Hotel 1990 Jazz and Blues Festival. The Gold Coast International Hotel was hosting its second annual two-day festival. With four venues, all within the hotel, presenting over 12 hours of jazz in each, there was an excellent representation of the best of Australian jazz. Ten Part Invention, on an Australia Council-funded tour to Newcastle, Byron Bay and the Gold Coast, showed why they are the best and most innovative large ensemble Australian jazz has produced….

Contemporary jazz ensemble, Ten Part Invention, contains many of the leading names in Australian jazz. In Armidale, Ten Part Invention will perform in concert at Lazenby Hall at 7.30 tomorrow night, hold jazz workshops at Madgwick Hall on Sunday at 10 am with a schools concert at 6 o'clock that night. This afternoon at 1 o'clock there will be an art show and wine tasting. Since its inception, Ten Part Invention has gained international acclaim for its presentation of the original Australian compositions which form its repertoire. The guiding light behind the group is drummer John Pochée who has built up an exceptional reputation since he first became involved in jazz in the 1950s…
