Over the years I have reviewed many performances by the singer Gregg Arthur whom I’ve long regarded as equally important in Australian jazz as the redoubtable Vince Jones. This performance at The Lounge in Chatswood, saw Arthur in top form, with the confidence that derives from being in the best surroundings. They include his indispensable colleagues pianist Peter Locke, bassist Craig Scott and drummer Andrew Dickeson, whom Arthur justifiably describes as “the best rhythm section in the country”; the splendid venue The Lounge in suburban Chatswood, a 300-seater whose facilities include a good grand piano and both a sound technician and a lighting technician; and the inclusion on this occasion of trumpeter Warwick Alder, a musician of such vast experience that the term “legendary” now appears to be increasingly apt…

It’s always a pleasure for me to review a James Morrison performance, because I’ve found that, as a jazz writer, there are always so many interesting things to write about. I last reviewed James on the occasion of a gig at Foundry 616 in April, 2023, where his quartet fashioned a rather unique performance designed for the small jazz club – laid-back, relaxed, intimate, without histrionics. A very beautiful performance in my own personal favourite type of venue to hear jazz, in front of a small, sold-out audience of maybe 130 people, many of them in the standing room only section near the bar.
