She recently completed her Masters of Music Studies (Vocal Pedagogy) at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has had a private studio practice for 20 years. Alongside her private teaching practice, she has been mentor, tutor and guest lecturer at various music institutions and schools as well as a facilitator of workshops in Brisbane with visiting national and international artists. This is the fifth in a series of interviews with a number of Australia’s most distinguished jazz artists. Born in Darwin, Australia on October 12, 1972, jazz saxophonist/flautist James Ryan has performed extensively throughout Australia and Europe. He was based in London for four years, 1997 to 2001. During that time he specialised in teaching children on the autism spectrum, or who have special needs. In 1989 James left Darwin to study at the Canberra School of Music, ANU. Following the awarding of a Masters of Music degree, majoring in jazz, he taught performance, improvisation and composition there before going on to teach at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Griffith University) and the Queensland University of Technology. James now leads a number of jazz ensembles, including the award-winning band The Subterraneans, the 15-piece big band Sonic Mayhem Orchestra, and the James Ryan Band…

This is the sixth in a series of interviews with a number of Australia’s most distinguished jazz artists. Ellen Kirkwood is an award-winning composer, trumpeter, bandleader and educator based in Sydney, Australia. She completed a Bachelor of Music, majoring in jazz performance, at Sydney Conservatorium in 2008, and was awarded first-class honours in composition at UNSW in 2020. In 2019 she was the winner of the NSW APRA Art Music Award for Jazz Excellence, and the 2012 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award for young women in jazz. She was a finalist in the 2017 Freedman Jazz Fellowships and her epic big band suite” [A]part” was a finalist for Jazz Work of the Year in the 2018 APRA Art Music Awards. In 2016 Ellen received a grant from the Australia Council for a composition mentorship with composer/pianist Barney McAll, during which she penned “[A]part”, a one-hour suite for Sirens Big Band…
