This is the seventh in a series of interviews with a number of Australia’s most distinguished jazz artists. In April 2023, Sharny Russell took up an appointment as Head of Contemporary Music at Armidale’s New England Conservatorium of Music. Over and above jazz, Sharny’s activities include a stint as musical director on the iconic Australian children’s television program Here’s Humphrey! With 160 songs, four completed musicals, degrees in classical piano and jazz music studies, and being known in the industry as a leading exponent of scat singing, Sharny’s versatility would appear to be her greatest asset.

A passionate educator, Andrew has lectured at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music since 2000 (Jazz Drums, Ensemble, Rhythm Section Workshop and Jazz History). He also teaches classes for the Open Academy and occasionally Conservatorium High School students. He has also taught at the University of NSW, Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane, and as a guest lecturer in schools, private tuition, clinics and workshops and as a visiting artist-in-residence for various institutions…
ELSEN PRICE: JAZZ BASSIST & IMPROVISER

Elsen Price was born in 1989 in rural North West NSW. He started double bass self taught in 1998. Elsen won the double bass/electric bass position in the NSW Police Band in 2008. In 2010 he won a scholarship to study at Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Alex Henery (Principal SSO), plus study with Kees Boersma (Principal SSO) and Maxime Bibeau (Principal ACO). Elsen also pursued further study with Andrew Meisel (Principal AOBO). From 2012 Elsen has pursued independent performance as a soloist, chamber musician and collaborator, with career highlights including multiple tours through Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Czech Republic and the UK, numerous international music festivals and many featured performances…
