NATIONAL JAZZ CO-ORDINATION NEWSLETTER

JazzChord was the newsletter of the National Jazz Co-ordination Program, issued by the Jazz Co-ordination Association of New South Wales between 1993 and 2002. This folder includes the 53 editions of JazzChord which were published, beginning with the final edition (No 64) and going in reverse order to the first edition (No 11) that was published in magazine form. The first ten editions (Nos 1-10), entitled National Jazz Co-ordination Newsletter were issued as Word documents in 1988 & 1989. They are included in this folder below. Photographs, which were not possible when these newsletters were issued, have been added.

The Contemporary Section of the Australian Singing Competition is on again, involving a number of prizes, including the $20,000 Grace Bros Prize. I won't list all the prizes here but the most relevant prize for jazz singers - other than the Grace Bros prize itself - is the $5,000 Black Stump Restaurants Jazz Award, which also includes professional engagements at the Don Burrows Supper Club, and on the annual Jazz Action Society of NSW "Singers Night". There are many other prizes which are part of the Competition and open to jazz singers…

In a two-weeks visit to the United States, from April 5-19, the AJO played to open-air audiences for three days at the Houston International Festival, in jazz clubs for one night in Chicago (The Jazz Showcase), San Francisco (Kimball's) and Los Angeles (Catalina Bar & Grill), in a New York jazz club (Carlos I) for three nights, and to a concert hall audience of over 400 at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.

I have been contacted by Dennis Smith, the entrepreneur responsible for the Monterey Jazz Festival Down Under, to be held as part of World Expo 88 in Brisbane. This venture has been on the cards for some years - since about the middle of 1984 - and Annette Bristow of Cairns has finally been able to bring it off. The event will include two simultaneous concerts on September 30 and October 1 in the Lyric Theatre and Concert Hall of the Brisbane Performing Arts Centre, plus a major open-air concert at the Expo 88 Brisbane River Stage on October 2, 1988…
